About
Tolay Valley Farms is a family owned and operated C.S.A. situated in the beautiful Tolay Valley in Sonoma county California. Our goal is to provide fresh, delicious, seasonal, local produce to our customers. Also we want to do this in a sustainable manner that respects the environment, the customer, and the farmer.
Now sustainable means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Here’s what sustainable means to me. To farm and market in a manner that can continue indefinitely, environmentally and economically .
How does a CSA work? Well it really is simple. The customer pays a monthly subscription fee and in return the farmer supplies them with fresh, delicious produce. One of the main benefits of this is that you know the farmer that is growing your food and if you ever have any questions about that produce the answer is an email away. Try asking that at the grocery store. Also the price is better for the customer and the farmer. By removing a couple middle men, the distributer and the grocery store, the customer pays less but the farmer still gets more. Now depending on how you look at it one of the benefits or drawbacks is that you don’t get to choose what produce you get. The farm decides what is in each share based on what is in season. This can be seen as a chance to be spontaneous and try new things or some of our costumers like that it forces them to eat more and healthier produce. To be sure that our customers always know what to do with their produce we provide a recipe page with links to food web sites and many recipes some of our own some from our customers.
Is our farm certified organic? No we are not certified organic but we do not use any pesticides even the organically approved ones and we use no artificial fertilizers. Now since we do not use any pesticides there will be a few bugs that may need to be washed off the produce.
